While you're busy getting your team and fleet ready for the colder months, it's just as important to prepare your business's water supply. The freezing and thawing of water in pipes can cause them to burst, leading to costly damage and business disruption.
Here's how to prepare your business for winter and avoid unexpected water issues.
Checking drains and gutters
Leaves can easily block drains and gutters, stopping water from moving through and can cause the water to seep through the roof and walls. If the water freezes, it can cause a lot of damage.
Check your stop tap
If a pipe bursts, the water damage could be costly. Knowing where your stop tap is and checking it works before an emergency means you’ll have time to get it fixed if it needs repairing.
Devise a contingency plan
Having a plan in place when your business loses water supply means it can still operate smoothly. This should include briefing your employees on who to call, how to spot issues and what steps to take.
Keep an eye on the weather
If you see a cold snap on its way, ensure you have everything prepared. Insulate lofts to reduce heat loss, and even if your business is closed, keep your heating on low to prevent pipes from freezing.
Make sure you're covered
Does your insurance include repairs to your pipework caused by burst mains? If it doesn't, you could consider taking out emergency cover. Also, ensure your employees know who to contact, should the need arise.
Submit meter readings
This can help you track your usage, so if you spot an increase in consumption, you know to check for a possible leak. Contact your water retailer if you are concerned about the consumption at your premises.
