Binsted Church of England Primary School is at the heart of an ambitious village-wide initiative to protect local water resources. By linking school infrastructure improvements to community environmental action, we are helping the school clear its corridors and enhance outdoor learning - one drop at a time.
The challenge
In April, we launched an innovative water-saving trial in Binsted. We challenged the village to reduce its collective water demand by 5% by 30 September.
The stakes are high for Binsted Church of England Primary School. If the village succeeds, we will award the school £5,000 to fund new outdoor wooden lockers. These lockers will house coats, wellies, and lunchboxes, effectively clearing clutter from indoor corridors and making it easier for students to transition to outdoor learning environments.
Key milestones:
- The halfway mark: If the village hits a 2.5% reduction by 30 June, we will immediately release £2,500 to the school.
- The final target: Achieving a 5% reduction by 30 September secures the full £5,000 grant.
Off to a flying start
The community has wasted no time in rallying together to save water. In the first month alone, residents have achieved a 0.92% reduction in water demand - nearly a fifth of the way to the final goal.
So far, we’ve seen incredible engagement:
- 47 pledges submitted by residents and local businesses.
- 0.92% savings achieved in just 30 days.
- 24/7 monitoring by our technicians to ensure no network leaks undermine the community’s hard work.
How we've supported the school

We aren't just cheering from the sidelines; we are actively working with the school to optimise their facilities.
On 23 April, our delivery partner, Groundwork, conducted a comprehensive technical water-efficiency audit at the school. During this visit, we:
- Assessed all internal fittings and checked for hidden leaks.
- Installed water-saving hardware, including 10 high-efficiency tap inserts.
- Resulted in an immediate saving of nearly 510 litres for the school.
To help the students and faculty lead the charge, we also provided large-scale banners and educational leaflets to turn the school into a hub for water-saving awareness.
Join the challenge
Every litre saved in Binsted helps protect the Greensand aquifer, the vital underground rock layer that provides the region’s water. By reducing daily demand, Binsted Church of England Primary School and its neighbours are easing the strain on the environment and ensuring water security for the entire region during the peak summer months.
